The Cinemalaya 2016 Film makers. |
During our interview with Chris Millado, Cinemalaya
Festival Director, he inform us that they do some evaluation and checking in
the past ten years, most film makers complain of time constraint and looking
for financial partners in a very limited time. That’s why they announce it
early this time and even on the coming years.
“This is part of our evaluation ng last ten years, ang
laging reklamo ng mga film makers kulang na kulang ang four months para bouin
ang pelikula, it used to be na pag-ina-announce sila they only have four months
to gather their financing, their partners, their casting, their production, the
post prod kaya most of the time hot from the oven ang kanilang mga pelikula”
Millado said.
Millado also mention that Cinemalaya is running
throughout the year due to series of activities, aside from the most intense
Festival held every August, they are doing the Cinemalaya Art House, Cinemalaya
campus and Cinemalaya Institute. He also
dismiss rumor that Business Tycoon Tony Boy Cojuangco is no longer part of
Cinemalaya, he is still the head of Cinemalaya Foundation and the one thinking
about the long term or sustainable plan of Cinemalaya.
He admit that they are still under exploratory talks
regarding funding for Cinemalaya, that’s why for 2016 they are not just going
back in status but will add more cinemas in Metro Manila, this is aside from
the CCP Cinemas, Greenbelt Cinemas, Trinoma Mall and Alabang Town Center. One
plan is doing it simultaneous in other region during the festival.
“Ticket sales are not enough to make this run, its only
25 to 30% percent of what we spent, Government keeps in pero hindi pa rin yun
enough so we have to look for other ways para mapuno ang budget so we can
continue cinemalaya.” Millado added.
Regarding the issue of uploading the Cinemalaya movies
online in 2014 Festival, Millado said that its now bridge under water between
the past participants of Cinemalaya, it is under the contract but they admit
that there is a miscommunication and they from the Festival decided to stop it
since it is not a clear ways of generating funds.

Cinemalaya Awards Night Performers. Isay Alvarez, Gian Magdangal, May Bayot, & Reuben Laurente. |
“Pinanindigan namin yun, talagang part yun ng contract,
hindi lang na-communicate sa mga film makers na gagawin na yung clause na yun
ng contract so practically napaliwanag na sa kanila, nagkaroon na ng dialogu,
at tanggap naman, but tinigilan muna naming hanggang sa makahanap ng mas
malinaw at effective na paraan to distribute.” Millado said.
Cinemalaya 2016 will only have full length category as
well as the short films, the new breed and directors showcase are now in one,
and the budget for each movie is now at P750, 000.000 Deadline for submission
