Kalaw, a crisp Cinematography and well written screenplay.

A Review by Aga Posadas

At a time when "hipster" became "mainstream", there are some artists who strive not to be labeled, those who understand the true meaning of art. Immy Rempis' short film "Kalaw" is proof that budding filmmakers do not need to please a certain audience.

The 16-minute film "Kalaw" explores the effects of sexual child abuse. Monik goes back to Kalaw, a river where she spent her childhood together with Bagyo and her younger sister Eca. As she and Bagyo live through the present, they reminisce their dark youth and raise questions that may never be answered. What really happened to Eca? How can they move on with their lives without the shadow of the past?

"Kalaw" is one of the films in the New Breed category of the 2014 Metro Manila Film Festival which will be shown in cinemas together with Gymsnatch and Magkakabaung. Compared to other films made by students in this film fest, Rempis' masterpiece can be ranked among those made by professionals. With her great choice of actors, crisp cinematography, well-written screenplay, we can see a bright future in the international scene for this autuer. According to Rempis, she wants the audience to be disturbed because when someone is disturbed, they start to think. Her mission is accomplished.

Verdict: B+. Thank you MMFF for creating this category. We now have a choice between films that matter and recycled movies that make us look stupid.
