Rep. Helen Tan, House Committee on Health Chairperson, files bill for the elimination of Trans Fat in the Philippine food supply

Rep. Angelina “Helen” Tan, district representative of Quezon (4th district), has filed House Bill No. 7934, “AN ACT TO PROTECT FILIPINOS FROM THE HARMFUL EFFECTS OF TRANS-FATTY ACIDS” or the Trans Fat Free Philippines Act on Wednesday, October 28, 2020.

Rep. Tan highlighted in her explanatory note the need to have an integrated and comprehensive approach to ensure that all Filipinos are health literate, provided with healthy living conditions, and protected from hazards and risks that could affect their health. Rep. Tan who spearheaded the passage of Republic Act No. 11223 or the Universal Health Care Act in 2019, now seeks to eliminate trans fat as part of “a healthcare model that provides all Filipinos access to a comprehensive set of quality and cost-effective, promotive, preventive, curative, rehabilitative and palliative health services without causing financial hardship and prioritizes the needs of the population who cannot afford such services.”

The proposed legislation is supported by the Department of Health who leads policy efforts to implement the World Health Organization’s REPLACE Action Package in the Philippines towards a Trans Fat Free World by 2023. The bill is also supported by professional and civil society organizations in nutrition and public health like public interest law organization, ImagineLaw.

There are currently three bills on the elimination of trans fat in the Philippines pending in the House of Representatives, House bill no. 7200 filed by Rep. Alfred Delos Santos, House Bill no. 7202 filed by Rep. Ronnie Ong, and HouseBill no. 7934 filed by Rep. Tan. The Trans Fat Free Philippines bills are expected to be scheduled for committee deliberations in November. (PR)
