The Stray Dog Question (A Review of Honor Thy Father)

Image
Direk Erik Matti and John Lloyd Cruz. This is going to be really short. Films like Honor Thy Father don't need hoity-toity praises. If only we can force every Filipino to watch this, maybe there could be a brighter future. Maybe that's an exaggeration. Honor Thy Father is Erik Matti's latest thriller, following the triumph of On the Job.  So a quick synopsis. Edgar (John Lloyd Cruz) and Kaye (Meryll Soriano) is involved in a pyramid scheme scam organized by Kaye's father. The father got killed. So the fraud victims, which are mostly members of a religious group where Edgar's family are members, hunt down Kaye. A couple even kidnapped the couples daughter, threatened to do more harm if they don't bring back their money. Frustrated, Edgar and Kaye seek the help of the leader of their shady church, where their murdered father donated a million pesos. But this step failed.  Time is running out so Edgar took the bull the horns. Joined by his miner si...

The Horse and his Boy, theater review.

Image
The Horse and his Boy. It is so far the best Filipino adaptation of a book made into play, the Horse and his boy by Trumpets productions surpass all my expectations in terms of reason why I go to theater. I must admit that acting, production value and its story is the strength of this Narnia classics that debut in Philippine Theater last November  5, 2015 at Meralco Theater. It’s the story of an orphan boy name Shasta and a talking horse Bree, they journey together towards freedom, in the north called Narnia. Along the way they met Noblewoman, Aravis and her talking mare, Hwin. And they both travel altogether. But their fate is somehow plotted with the beloved characters of The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, the grown-ups Susan, Edmund and Lucy who now reigns as monarch of Narnia. And of course who could forget Aslan, the great and big lion. Luna Grino-Inocian is the playwright for this C.S Lewis well love classic, while Jaime Del Mundo magnificently direc...

The Me in This Is Our Youth. A Theater Review.

Image
I entered an unusual space. With nothing but a bed and a 24 inch square TV on the center, a seemingly decorated bathroom and scourged fridge on both corners, the seemingly door entering a seemingly room, and table and chairs place horizontally against each other. I entered somebody else's apartment, transported to an era where there is a deliberate separation of the young generation from a post -hippie-youth; transported to a place where the liberals are powerful and the rich and wayward kids in the neighborhood hide their damnest insecurities through running away from home. The people I usually called the “audience” were awkwardly seated on the floor, occupying the space provided for them, anticipating what will become of this play, anticipating their expectations of the characters they will see or plainly intrigued by this non-plot play from award winning playwright Kenneth Lonnergan. And then the invisible curtain opens, there enters a some 19- year- old k...

Diana King and All 4 one, in one night.

Image
Of course I didn’t say no when I got invited by a friend to watch the Diana King and All 4 One concert, held last Oct 28, 2015 at the Newport Performing Arts Theater of Resort World at Pasay City. These two are one my many icons of 90’s that I really wish to see on stage. Diana open the show, you will feel the mood of her beat and all out belting that reflect how excited she is, Diana is not new to Manila, she’s here 5 years ago, she’s turning 45 now and she’s still the Diana King we saw on those old videos, still can make you dance to your feet through her reggae fusion music. On her spiels, Diana shared a lot of stories to the almost full audience on a Wednesday night, one of it is the song “Treat Her Like a Lady” that she allowed Celine Dion to revive it, she declare that she love Celine and appreciate it her version, while the song “Love yourself” according to King is written for her sister, that later on it became personal to her to the point that she did ask herself th...
